Cluain na Gréine
An expansion of a period Arts and Crafts dwelling, historically known as ‘Cluain na Gréine’ or Sunny Meadow, this project aspires to reengage the home with this traditional understanding of its site and context. Interventions were conceived as fingers of new built form extending into the surrounding landscape, simultaneously enclosing new internal rooms and defining adjacent garden ‘rooms’ between them. Spaces are sequentially discovered when circulating the home and meandering the garden paths, revealing distinct moments of light and view, refuge and delight.
The Arts and Crafts tradition of the local suburban context inspired a use of materials that would compliment the historic context but set contemporary additions apart. Similarly, interventions are formally abstracted interpretations of the original form, in particular the dwelling’s visually rich front gable. A language of pitched roofs, deep soffits and chimney stacks, expressed through a palate of red brick, warm timber, dark slate and zinc, was explored.
